Worthy is the Lamb... *Worthy is the Lamb* *Who was slain and seated on the throne* There is no one like the Lord Elders, creatures bow Giving praise to Him and Him alone There is no one like the Lord Revelation 5:8-14 describes a worship service in the throne room of the heavens that resounds through the whole of creation with every single creature saying: "Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, And to the Lamb, forever and ever!" They praise the Ancient of Days seated on the throne and the Son of Man (who was slain like a Lamb and raised in power) who stands at the center. Compare Daniel 7 and Daniel 12 for context. Note that the Lamb stands and is not seated on the throne until Revelation 22 immediately after the wedding scene in Rev 21. Therefore, this song is not a mere recounting of the scene in Revelation 5, but a meditation upon it and the whole of the scroll of the Revelation of Jesus. Pretty much every case where a people are presenting a crown to a king is the beginning of a bad story of failure. That is the pattern when people inaugurate a king - because the people who want to have the king don't have the ability to desire the right king. And because the human who would be king comes from the same flawed people. Yahweh's desire before the old covenant was to make his people a kingdom of priests - people who were all under-kings of him without an intermediary king. This desire has now been realized through the new covenant in Christ. You are a royal priesthood... a people belonging to God. He is our king, but because he is also our God, there is no intermediary. How wonderfully clever! But then why say "We crown you King" if Yahweh is the one who presents the crown to Jesus? Zechariah 9:15-17 describes Yahweh's salvation for his people in the context of a battle for their freedom from their enemies: "The Lord their God will save his people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown. How attractive and beautiful they will be!.." Proverbs 12:4 is also applicable: A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown... As the church, we are the bride of Christ. So in that sense we do crown him because we are his crown. It is not that we have the necessary authority to inaugurate his kingship. Instead, we are the beautiful crowns (many crowns) worn by Christ from his victory over the red dragon with seven crowns and the beast with ten crowns. Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 2:6 God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. Christ has been raised and enthroned. And we are seated with him resting as his crown because he has made us beautiful. It is also interesting that the context of Glory is the weight of God's presence that shines brighter than the sun. So the image of a sparkling crown (or many crowns) on the head of Jesus coincides with the concept of the shining weight also. This is a poignant picture of unity. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” In liturgical response, the 24 elders remove and present their crowns (an image of submission to greater authority than their crowns represent). In Revelation 7:13-17, multitudes of martyrs (who are dressed in victorious white because they triumphed in loyalty to the Lamb) serve Yahweh day and night. Then one of the elders addressed me: “These in white robes,” he asked, “who are they, and where have they come from?” “Sir,” I answered, “you know.” So he replied, “These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason, they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and the One seated on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. ‘Never again will they hunger, and never will they thirst; nor will the sun beat down upon them, nor any scorching heat.’ For the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd. ‘He will lead them to springs of living water,’ and ‘God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” To sing Day and night Night and day We will worship We will worship is to join in the throne room service of worship of Yahweh and the Lamb. And it is equivalent to a declaration of loyal trust that Jesus will be our Shepherd as well. Our worship is an overflow of the cup of his own provision to us. Though the battle language is associated with gory imagery that may offend the squeamish, we can rest knowing that Jesus is not a murderer of world, but its savior. The battle language declares his supremacy and victory in order to inspire us to greater trust. The spirit of empire - a tower built from dark bricks that oppress and trap humanity - a giant beastly sea dragon that tries to drag creation back into the chaotic deep - is on the run. But it cannot escape becoming a feast for the warrior lamb who prepares the table in the presence of my enemies for the wedding feast.
